To build the powerful base of seven million white people acting as part of a multi-racial majority for racial justice, SURJ Action is building our membership. SURJ Action member dues are self-determined, based on the principle of equity — meaning that as a member, you choose the dues amount that is right for you and your family. The suggested minimum is $5/month. On average, members choose $15-25+/month.
SURJ Action membership dues are determined by each member and their family according to their ability. We know that the base membership of $5/month or $60/year can still be a challenge. No one will be turned away from membership because of financial hardship. SURJ Action recognizes class disparities and is working to center the leadership of poor and working class people in all of our work. Your gift of any size will renew your membership for another year.
Contributions to SURJ Action are not tax-deductible; they support our 501(c)4 political, advocacy and lobbying efforts.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS)
Would you prefer a one-time gift or a monthly donation?
We would love a monthly donation. Our monthly donors are so helpful in providing the long-term, consistent support that allows us to plan long-term, spend less time following-up with donors to renew, and vision big.
Is my SURJ Action donation tax-deductible?
No, donations to SURJ Action are not tax-deductible; they support our 501(c)4 political, advocacy, and lobbying efforts.
If I can't afford the minimum of $5/month or $60/year, can I still become a member?
Yes, we want everyone to be a member and we know that the base membership fees can be a challenge. No one will be turned away from membership because of financial hardship. SURJ Action recognizes class disparities and is working to center the leadership of poor and working class people in all of our work. Your gift of any size will renew your membership for another year.
What if I really just want to give a one-time gift?
You can. One-time gifts of any size, with a suggested minimum of $60, will be counted as a membership.
How did you come up with $5/month or more?
We looked at successful membership programs from several community organizing groups working with poor and working class people, and talked with several organizers who have done work mobilizing a primarily white working-class membership base. Examples we looked at included New York Communities for Change, several groups in Oregon where membership dues are roughly equivalent to two hours wages per month, the Vermont Workers Center, and to historical examples like the United Farm Workers organizing in the 60’s, whose membership dues would be around $27/month if adjusted for inflation.
We wanted to choose a sliding scale for membership that would be honor all of our belief in the importance of SURJ Action and our work together for racial justice, while also being accessible. As long-time organizer Kamau Marcharia said, "Poor people have always paid for our own revolutions".
How do I renew my membership?
All monthly donors will have their membership automatically renewed as long as their monthly donation is active. All other donors (who aren’t giving monthly) will be asked to renew their membership with a qualifying donation ($60 or more) after the beginning of the following year.
If I give a one-time donation, will I be reminded to renew my membership?
Yes, we will send you an email a month before your membership will expire, reminding you to renew.
Do you have any guidance on how much I should donate?
An amount that honors your belief in and commitment to SURJ Action and our mission, helps you reach any goals you have around giving, and makes sense financially. If you have more, please consider giving more. We depend on our supporters giving above the minimum membership amount in order to sustain SURJ Action, meet our budget, and keep the organization going. If you are interested in our major donor program, for people who can give $1,000 or more, please contact Kristen Brock-Petroshius.
What is the relationship between SURJ and SURJ Action?
SURJ members across the country have been organizing to act as part of a multi-racial majority for racial justice. But SURJ hasn’t been able to provide all of the support that chapters and affiliates need because of restrictions that come with being a 501(c)(3). SURJ Action has been formed to further our racial justice goals by responding strategically in this political moment as a 501(c)(4) organization. SURJ and SURJ Action are separate but affiliated organizations.
